Mumm Cordon Rouge Vintage 1988

Gradually revealing greater depth and character, Mumm Cordon Rouge Oenothèque Vintage 1988 has proven to be a remarkable year, combining precision and lasting power.

1988 was a classic and balanced vintage in Champagne, marked by a mild, but rainy winter, followed by a regular growing session. The summer brought alternating dry and wet weather, ensuring slow and even ripening. Harvest began around mid-September under favorable conditions, yielding grapes of perfect maturity with remarkable natural acidity and an average potential alcohol of 9,2%.

The resulting wines combine purity, freshness and structure – qualities that have allowed this vintage to stand as of Champagne’s most harmonious and age-worthy harvests.

BREAKING NEW GROUND TO REVEAL THE ESSENCE OF PINOT NOIR

The history of Maison Mumm is rooted in exceptional terroirs and an iconic grape variety: Pinot Noir, renowned for its bold character. Powerful yet elegant, it plays a central role in the House’s historic blends.

This cuvée is at major part a Pinot Noir, with 65% primarly selected from the Montagne de Reims, home to Maison Mumm’s historic Grand Cru plots; combining the suppleness of Verzenay & the balance of Ambonnay as well as from the Vallée de la Marne, where the elegance of Aÿ and Avenay brings a delicate touch to the wine.

The remaining 35% comes from Chardonnay of the Côte des Blancs, showcasing the finesse of Cramant and refinement of Avize.

For the first time, harvest dates were set individually for each village and each grape variety to better account for different ripening rythms. Picking began on September 19th and extended through October 2, under mostly favorable weather conditions apart from a few scattered showers.
Rarely, in the memory of Champenois has such balance of fruit ripeness been seen. The summer conditions naturally allowed for a remarkable concentration of the grapes’ components.

behind the cuvée

The first records of a vintage Champagne at Maison Mumm date back to 1842

  • Mumm vineyards
  • It was a blend produced from grapes cultivated on the vineyards of the Montagne de Reims, already reputed at the time for the excellence of Pinot Noir grapes grown in Ay, Verzenay and Bouzy. The House’s trademark style was already remarkable, and remains recognizable to this day, nearly two hundred years later. Mumm’s vintage Champagnes showcase the House’s most exceptional harvests and demonstrate the extraordinary aging potential of the finest Pinot Noir wines.

The 2015 vintage saw humid weather conditions typical of the Champagne region, followed by unusually dry weather ideal for maintaining the grapes in perfect health during the harvest. All in all, it was a remarkable year with exceptionally ripe grapes that served as an omen of the rich, enticing character that would develop in the wine.
