Yesterday Cordon Rouge Club Member Dee Caffari MBE set sail on her next thrilling adventure. Sailing Arabia - The Tour is a 15 day yacht race starting in Dubai and is due to end in Muscat, via Abu Dhabi, Doha, Khasab and Sohar, before reaching the finish line in the Oman capital. Teams of sailors from all over the globe are competing in identical yachts which determine what makes this particular competition so unique. It won’t be the speed of the vessels which will prove the worthy winners but the preparation, teamwork and technical skill involved. Along with the mercurial wind conditions the competition is designed to bring out the best in the world’s most accomplished sailors.
Not that Dee is a stranger to any of this. As a descendant of a sea captain it would seem Dee was destined for a successful life on the water. In 2006 she became the befitting recipient of an MBE in recognition of her achievement to become the first woman to complete a solo circumnavigation, mastering high winds and prodigious currents. Since then she has gone on to achieve many more feats, she is involved in numerous competitive sailing campaigns and is a world renowned motivational speaker. Most recently Dee has become an ambassador to UKSA, a charity that prides itself on ‘breaking down barriers and giving young people the skills not just for maritime employment but for wider employment ’. With her elite sporting background Dee is able to contribute greatly to the cause. Oman Sail who are engaging this current tour are also great advocates of providing otherwise unavailable opportunities for young men and women as they pledge to teach 70,000 Omani children to sail by 2020 at seven new sailing schools along the Omani coast ‘instilling confidence and teaching valuable, marketable and transferable life skills.’
