CORDON ROUGE CLUB MEMBER DAVID HEMPLEMAN-ADAMS COMPLETES INCREDIBLE ARCTIC EXPEDITION TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

Cordon Rouge Club member David Hempleman-Adams and his team have successfully completed ‘The Polar Ocean Challenge’, a circumnavigation of the North Pole  in one summer season (4 months and 1 day), to highlight climate change. The seven person crew is the first British team to complete the 14,000 mile long route, taking the team through the Northeast and Northwest Passages and along the west coast of Greenland, a route that would have previously been impossible due to impeding sea ice. The expedition has demonstrated that the Arctic sea’s ice coverage shrinks so far back that permanently locked up sea now melts in the summer to allow passage.

Despite the risks associated with circumnavigating the Arctic, David hopes the journey will help highlight progressive warming, the melting of the polar ice caps, and emphasise the need to ‘Navigate the Future of the Arctic responsibly’. The North West Passage was completed in an astonishing 14 days because it was nearly ice free, with the team encountering ice only twice during this 1800 mile part of the voyage.

On the final leg back to Bristol, David stated ‘this whole thing was to make people aware of the climate and what’s happening up in the high Arctic but I never realised how extreme conditions have been, in the sense of no ice whatsoever... the more people that become aware of the situation the better.’

We raise a glass of MUMM to you, David for this incredible achievement and your work in trying to curb progressive warming. #DareWinCelebrate
