Champagne and Bubbles

Exploring the Science Behind the Effervescence

At Mumm, we believe that life is worth celebrating, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a glass of champagne. Distinctive feature is the tiny bubbles that dance on the surface of the liquid. These bubbles are what make champagne unique and add to the overall experience of enjoying this drink. In this article, we’ll delve into the science behind the effervescence of our favorite drink.

The Traditional Method of Making Champagne

Champagne is prepared using the carbonation method, which involves a second alcoholic fermentation in the bottle. This process traps carbon dioxide gas in the bottle, producing the characteristic bubbles that make champagne so unique.

At Mumm, we’ve been making champagne using the traditional method since 1827. Our signature cuvee, the Mumm Cordon Rouge, is a testament to the time-honored techniques of champagne-making.

The Role of Temperature

The temperature at which champagne is fermented for the second time affects the amount and size of bubbles. Cooler temperatures result in smaller bubbles, while warmer temperatures produce larger bubbles.

At Mumm, we recommend serving our champagne chilled, at a temperature of around 8-10 degrees Celsius for a rather refined drinking experience.

The Chemistry of Bubbles

The effervescence of champagne is a captivating sight to behold, and it all comes down to the unique chemistry of this libation. Carbon dioxide gas is drawn to the minuscule imperfections on the surface of the glass, known as nucleation sites. These tiny nooks and crannies serve as a launching pad for the bubbles to form, bursting forth in an exuberant dance towards the surface. As they rise, they bring other bubbles along for the ride, creating a frothy, foamy texture that is synonymous with the bubbly beverage.

At Mumm, we’re passionate about exploring new frontiers in champagne-making. Our Mumm Cordon Rouge Stellar is the first champagne designed to be enjoyed in space. By using a unique bottle design and a special dosage, we’ve been able to create bubbles that are larger and more stable, ensuring a perfect sip in zero gravity.

In conclusion, the bubbles in champagne are an essential part of the experience. At Mumm, we’re proud to uphold the traditions of champagne-making while also pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just enjoying the finer things in life, a glass of Mumm champagne is always a cause for celebration.
